Botox is by far one of the most popular minimally invasive cosmetic treatments. Why is it so popular? First and foremost, it does what it says it does, which is to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines and furrows. Other things that make Botox so popular are its relatively low cost when compared to surgeries such as a facelift, its relative painlessness and the speed at which it is performed. The down time from treatment is all but nonexistent, the results are long lasting, and the procedure is safe.
How Does Botox Work?
Scientists have known for a long time that the botulinin toxin interferes with signals sent by a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine. One of the things acetylcholine regulates is muscle contractions. Doctors found that when the muscles beneath a wrinkle are paralyzed, the wrinkle smooths out.
Botox is a purified and diluted version of the botulinin toxin. It is delivered by very fine needles while the patient rests in a treatment chair.
After the treatment, the patient can go home or even return to school or work. Some doctors recommend that the patient not lie down for a few hours after their session, then sleep with their head elevated.
Similar to Botox
Dysport, like regular Botox, is made from type A botulinum toxin. Dysport appears to act faster than regular Botox, but Botox appears to be longer lasting. Dysport is less expensive than Botox and is especially good at treating moderate to severe glabellar lines.
Xeomin is also made from botulinum toxin type A, but unlike Dysport it does not have as much of a protein load and does not need to be refrigerated. Xeomin also takes longer to start to work.
